Cryan's New Anti-Stalking Bill Goes Too Far

There are now two new anti-stalking bills, sponsored by Assemblyman Cryan, up for passage. One bill (A-2143) would make any contact by email prohibited. Fair enough and surely justifiably so.

The second bill (A-3348), however, would require a person convicted of stalking to register their email accounts, user names and passwords with local law enforcement. In essence, the requirements of the second bill would give local law enforcement the ability to read private, work or business-related emails which is akin to an open-ended wiretap. It’s been reported that Assemblyman Cryan was the victim of a stalker and I suspect the reason for his new bills. Anyone who has been stalked knows how terrifying it can be. Assemblyman Cryan isn’t the first person to be victimized by a stalker, but he must be one of the first to tailor-make a bill for himself.

The second bill would violate the Fourth Amendment. It just goes too far and our lawmakers shouldn't get carried away tinkering with the Constitution, whether the victim is a politician or a regular citizen.
